Reform UK fiscal and regulatory policy proposals

Reform UK has introduced several fiscal and regulatory proposals aimed at reforming the United Kingdom’s tax and administrative systems.

Initially, the party proposed a £30 non-refundable tax credit for individuals waiting on the phone to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) for over 30 minutes. To improve performance, the party suggested linking the pay of senior HMRC officials to customer service targets. Reform UK also expressed intent to replace current UK privacy rules with a framework modeled on New Zealand’s legislation to reduce regulatory burdens.

Following this, Shadow Chancellor Robert Jenrick announced a pledge to raise the tax-free personal allowance from £12,570 to £15,000 within the first 100 days of a government. This measure is intended to benefit approximately 40 million people. The party plans to fund its platform through £108 billion in budget cuts, including £50 billion in welfare spending reductions. Jenrick stated, “If I don’t deliver this exactly when I have said that I will, I will resign.” The Labour Party has criticized these announcements, characterizing them as a distraction from police investigations into potential breaches of political donation rules involving overseas companies.
