Reggio Calabria international event hosting initiatives

Reggio Calabria is pursuing a strategy to increase its international profile and economic growth through the hosting of major sporting and cultural events.

In September 2026, the region was officially selected to host the 2026 Next Gen ATP Finals at the PalaCalafiore from December 9 to 13. Announced in New York, the tournament marks the return of this prestigious Under-20 competition to Italy following recent editions in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The event will feature the eight best young male tennis players in the world competing for a $2 million prize pool.

Calabria Region President Roberto Occhiuto noted that the tournament serves as a “significant tool for territorial and tourism promotion.” The decision to host the event in Southern Italy is viewed as a strategic move to balance Italy’s major tennis landscape, which includes the Davis Cup in Bologna and the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.

While the tournament is considered a major victory for the region, local organizers face logistical challenges. The PalaCalafiore is expected to be occupied for much of December for setup and technical testing, which may impact local indoor sports clubs and scheduled activities at the venue.

Simultaneously, local administration officials expressed intentions to leverage the city’s maritime assets and natural resources to attract global interest. This includes hosting events such as the OptiSud – Mediterranean Cup, a youth sailing competition, as part of an effort to transform the city into a “major Mediterranean protagonist.”
