Reggio Emilia cultural promotion initiatives

In early July 2026, the city of Reggio Emilia submitted a bid to become the European Capital of Volunteering for 2028, signalling its intent to raise its profile in civic engagement across Europe. Later that month, the municipality, together with the Fondazione Palazzo Magnani, launched an international public call to select the artistic direction for the Fotografia Europea festival for the 2027‑2029 editions. Officials highlighted the aim of transforming the festival into a permanent, year‑round cultural platform that includes exhibitions, research, training, residencies and participatory projects, while strengthening its international reputation.

Both moves reflect a coordinated effort by Reggio Emilia’s local government and cultural institutions to position the city as a hub for volunteering and contemporary photography, leveraging European‑wide programmes to attract curators, collectives and artistic professionals from Italy and abroad.
