Regional political and economic disputes in Spain

Local governance in the Spanish regions of Castelló and Valencia has been marked by debates over funding and resource allocation. In Onda, the City Council approved a 172,800 euro mentorship program to support local commerce and generational succession, alongside accepting tourism subsidies from the Castellón Provincial Tourism Board.

However, political tensions have emerged regarding the management of regional funds. In Castelló, the PSOE criticized the local government for failing to apply for National Drug Plan grants intended for youth prevention programs. This criticism intensified as provincial president Marta Barrachina faced accusations from the PSPV-PSOE for reducing the ‘Bons Consum’ retail support program from a promised 5 million euros to 2 million euros, a move described as ‘amputated’ amid a decline in local retail businesses.

In Valencia, disputes have arisen over municipal land and housing. Local officials denounced the government for waiving its right to acquire a building containing 114 protected housing units, which was part of a previous land exchange agreement. Critics noted the decision lacked formal justification or economic valuation.
