Regional reservoir levels and rainfall monitoring
Overview
Recent heavy rainfall has led to significant increases in reservoir capacities across parts of Bulgaria and Turkey.
In Bulgaria, reservoir levels reached a 64.81% capacity as of mid-October, marking an eight-year high for this period. The Ministry of Environment and Water reported that total volumes in 52 major reservoirs are over 12% higher than the previous year. Due to ongoing rainfall, meteorological authorities issued yellow and orange alerts for various regions, advising local governments to prepare for rising river levels and potential flooding.
In Turkey, precipitation has similarly boosted water reserves in Istanbul and Yalova. By late October, Istanbul’s total water reserve stabilized at approximately 53.01%, though levels vary significantly between the Anatolian side and the European side. In Yalova, the Gökçe Dam saw occupancy rise from 49% to a peak of 74% before adjusting to 66% as authorities conducted controlled water discharges to manage levels.
