Regional sports competitions in Guyana and Suriname
Overview
In late 2026, regional sporting events took place in the Guianas. The Amerindian Heritage Games opened in Georgetown, Guyana, on September 24, featuring athletes from all ten Guyanese regions. The event, themed ‘Observing Our Cultural Heritage During Our Diamond Jubilee’, focused on talent development and hinterland inclusion.
Following this, the 2026 Inter-Guyanese Games (IGS) opened on October 23 at the Anthony Nesty Sports Hall in Suriname. Operating under the motto ‘Building Nation Through School Sport’, the competition involved youth athletes from Suriname, Guyana, and French Guiana. Minister of Youth Development and Sport Lalinie Gopal noted that the games, a tradition dating back to 1967, serve to ‘strengthen regional cooperation and ties between neighboring countries’. The program included athletics, basketball, volleyball, swimming, chess, and futsal, with the addition of boxing and judo.
By the conclusion of the IGS on October 25, Guyana emerged as the overall winner with 475 points, driven by strong performances in athletics and swimming. French Guiana finished in second place with 444 points, while host nation Suriname placed third with 431 points. In the futsal final held in Paramaribo, Guyana successfully defended its title by defeating Suriname 7-5.
