In late 2026, regional sporting events took place in the Guianas. The Amerindian Heritage Games opened in Georgetown, Guyana, on September 24, featuring athletes from all ten Guyanese regions. The event, themed ‘Observing Our Cultural Heritage During Our Diamond Jubilee’, focused on talent development and hinterland inclusion. Following this, the 2026 Inter-Guyanese Games (IGS) opened on October 23 at the Anthony Nesty Sports Hall in Suriname. This multi-sport Operating under the motto ‘Building Nation Through School Sport’, the competition involved youth athletes from Suriname, Guyana, and French Guiana, featuring disciplines such as Guiana.
