Reinstatement of Italian referee Rosario Abisso
Overview
Referee Rosario Abisso sought reinstatement after being dismissed by the Italian Referees Association (AIA) at the end of the previous season. In early August 2026, the Federal Tribunal of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) issued a provisional decision allowing Abisso to participate in the pre-season camp and making him eligible for the start of the Serie A championship.
On September 3, 2026, the National Federal Tribunal (TFN) officially reinstated Abisso following a successful appeal. The tribunal ruled that the AIA’s July 1 decision to remove him from the National Referees Commission (CAN) was illegitimate. While the AIA had cited “limits of permanence in the role” to facilitate turnover, the tribunal found the application of these regulations to be “flawed or disproportionate.” Abisso, who has been with the AIA since 2002, returns to active duty immediately.
