Release of Australian drama The Airport Chaplain
Overview
In late July 2026, SBS announced that the eight-part series The Airport Chaplain will premiere on 26 August 2026 on its broadcast channel, with the show also made available on SBS On Demand. Netflix secured worldwide streaming rights (outside Australia) covering more than 190 territories, offering subtitles in Arabic, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese. A world-premiere screening was held at the Melbourne International Film Festival, and development of a second season is already under way.
Produced by Wooden Horse, the series stars Hugo Weaving as Tobias Wallace, an airport chaplain who acts as an “unorthodox fixer for daily workplace crises,” and Shabana Azeez as Mira, a new terminal manager tasked with controlling rising costs. The drama, which also features Claudia Karvan and Thomas Weatherall, follows the tensions between Wallace’s established methods and Mira’s management.
By late August, the series began streaming on SBS On Demand. The show is inspired by real events at Melbourne Airport, where a chaplain’s interaction with a TV producer served as the catalyst for the series concept. The narrative explores the tension between pastoral care and airport operations as Wallace provides emotional, spiritual, and practical support to passengers and staff while clashing with Mira over service approaches and profitability.
