Release of Ava DuVernay documentary ‘14th’
Overview
Filmmaker Ava DuVernay has released ‘14th’, a documentary examining the Fourteenth Amendment and its contemporary relevance to issues such as birthright citizenship, due process, and equal protection. The film serves as a successor to her previous work, ‘13th’.
Following its premiere at the New York Film Festival, where it faced debate regarding the ethics of using generative AI to reanimate archival photographs, the documentary was presented as a Special Documentary Presentation at the London Film Festival. DuVernay noted that while she reached out to over 300 individuals identified as Republican or MAGA, only four agreed to participate. Interview subjects include Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Stacey Abrams, Bryan Stevenson, Hasan Piker, and Representative Anna Paulina Luna.
During the two-year production, the project evolved from a focus on birthright citizenship to addressing broader systematic attacks on the amendment. DuVernay described the amendment as a “hidden operating system” that, alongside the 13th and 15th amendments, effectively created a new constitution layered onto the original.
In response to criticism regarding the use of artificial intelligence to animate historical figures, DuVernay defended the practice during discussions at AFI Fest. She clarified that the technology was used to animate public domain archival photographs to increase immediacy, rather than to fabricate people, create digital avatars, or approximate voices. She argued that filmmakers must be “sober about the ways in which that technology is [used] across so much of the workflow,” noting its integration into standard editing and sound design.
A special free presentation featuring a live conversation with participants is scheduled for October 29 at the Ford Theater in Los Angeles. The documentary is set for a worldwide debut on Netflix on December 4.
