Religious discourse on artificial intelligence

Religious organizations and academic bodies have begun holding conferences to examine the intersection of artificial intelligence and Christian theology.

In August 2026, the Reformed Conference in Szárszó, Hungary, addressed the theme ‘Soul and Algorithm.’ Participants discussed how AI affects education, pastoral ministry, and children’s screen time. Discussions highlighted the spectrum of views on technology, ranging from seeing AI as a digital manifestation of the devil to an essential modern achievement. Pastor András Gér noted that while tasks can be delegated to technology, responsibility cannot.

Following this, the Evangelical Church in Germany, the Council of Evangelical Theological Faculties, and the Conference of Institutes for Protestant Theology organized a joint conference in Hofgeismar titled ‘AI, Theology and Discrimination.’ The event focused on the opportunities and challenges AI presents to science, humanity, and theology. A central theme was the tendency of AI systems to reproduce and amplify existing systemic discriminations, raising ethical and theological questions regarding responsibility for algorithmic decisions and the pursuit of technological justice. The conference included lectures and workshops aimed at ensuring more discrimination-sensitive applications of AI in research, teaching, church, and school settings.
