Renewable energy and manufacturing growth in India
Overview
Tamil Nadu is experiencing significant industrial growth in the renewable energy and electric vehicle sectors. Vikram Solar inaugurated a 6-gigawatt solar module manufacturing plant in Tirunelveli, an expansion that increases the company’s total annual photovoltaic module manufacturing capacity to 15.5 GW. This facility is expected to create over 800 skilled jobs and aims to eventually integrate the production of cells, wafers, and ingots.
In addition to solar manufacturing, clean-tech firm Plugzmart signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tamil Nadu government to invest Rs 100 crore to expand electric vehicle charger manufacturing and research capabilities in Oragadam, Vallam.
On a national scale, India’s solar capacity is accelerating rapidly. Projections indicate that India will commission more solar capacity in 2026 than in any previous year, with annual additions expected to exceed 50 GW. This follows a trend where cumulative capacity rose from 2.82 GW in early 2014 to over 162 GW by mid-2026.
