Renewable energy expansion in Egypt and Tunisia

Overview

Renewable energy infrastructure is expanding across Egypt and Tunisia through large-scale solar and storage projects. In Egypt, Scatec has commenced commercial operations for the 1.1GW Obelisk solar and 200MWh battery energy storage project in the Qena Governorate, which is noted as “Africa’s largest hybrid solar and battery installation.” Additionally, Scatec reached financial close for the 120MW Sidi Bouzid II solar plant in Tunisia, a project supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank.

Efforts in Egypt have further progressed with the launch of LONGi ONE, an integrated photovoltaic and digital intelligence solution. Furthermore, construction has begun on the Sungrow Power Suez plant in the Egypt-China TEDA Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone. This facility is intended to be the first dedicated manufacturing plant for advanced battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the Middle East and Africa, aiming to localize clean-energy technologies and enhance grid stability.
