Renfe high-speed rail expansion in Portugal
Overview
Spanish rail operator Renfe is pivoting its international expansion strategy toward the Portuguese market following regulatory challenges in France. The company is preparing to homologate Talgo-manufactured series 106 and 107 high-speed trains to comply with Portuguese technical and safety standards.
The expansion project involves adapting roughly 30 train units with an estimated investment of at least 20 million euros. The process is expected to take 44 months, targeting the commencement of operations by 2030. Planned corridors include connections between Vigo and Porto, as well as routes linking Lisbon to Madrid via Badajoz. Spanish Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, indicated that the shared Iberian track gauge and improved institutional coordination make Portugal a high-growth alternative for the operator.
