Repatriation of Italian military remains
Overview
Italy has conducted several operations to repatriate the remains of soldiers who died during the World Wars.
In September 2026, 32 unidentified Italian soldiers from World War I were returned to Italy from Slovenia. The remains had been discovered in 2022 near Vrtojba. Following a commemorative ceremony at the Redipuglia Military Memorial, the soldiers were buried at the Oslavia Military Memorial.
In October 2026, the remains of two Italian soldiers from World War II were repatriated from Germany. Sergeant Gino Signoracci, who died in a prisoner-of-war camp in May 1945, was returned to his hometown of Mondolfo. Corporal Major Angelo Mariuccini, who died in a concentration camp in November 1944, was transferred from Hamburg to the Perugia region. These efforts were coordinated by the Ministry of Defense and the Office for the Protection of Defense Culture and Memory.
