Republika Srpska energy and land use management

Authorities in Republika Srpska are addressing challenges regarding energy production and resource management. The Minister of Energy and Mining, Petar Đokić, announced that Elektroprivreda Republike Srpske will analyze household electricity consumption. This move follows discussions regarding potential price modeling if consumption exceeds specific thresholds, particularly from electric heating. While Đokić noted that current electricity rates are among the lowest in the region, he highlighted a financial crisis for local thermal power plants caused by high production costs and low prices.

Simultaneously, officials are debating the impact of renewable energy on land resources. Milorad Dodik, leader of the SNSD, criticized the construction of solar power plants on high-quality agricultural land in the Lijevče polje region, describing the practice as an “abuse.” Dodik and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Water Management have called for new regulations to ensure that energy production does not compromise food production, suggesting that solar projects should be restricted to neglected or unproductive land.
