Republika Srpska war veteran commemorations
Overview
Republika Srpska officials and veterans have held several commemorations to honor those who fought for the entity’s creation.
In late August, Radan Ostojić, the Minister of Labor and Disabled Veterans Affairs, announced a large gathering in Han Pijesak for demobilized fighters, war invalids, and families of fallen soldiers. The event included plans to lay a foundation stone for the reconstruction of the ‘Jela’ motel, intended to serve as a museum or memorial for the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS). While officials described the assembly as a symbol of Serbian unity, some veteran association leaders reported receiving no invitations.
In September, commemorations were held in Prijedor to mark the Day of Prijedor War Units and the 35th anniversary of the First Prnjavor Light Infantry Brigade. During these events, Minister Ostojić emphasized that the sacrifices of these units were essential to the defense of Republika Srpska. Local veterans' leadership noted that the Prijedor area contributed approximately 17,000 fighters, resulting in 637 deaths and 2,000 injuries.
