Research on intensive blood pressure reduction

Overview

A meta-analysis of 27 studies involving approximately 90,000 participants indicates that intensive blood pressure reduction significantly lowers the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Research published in JAMA Cardiology shows that for every 10 mmHg reduction in systolic blood pressure, the risk of major cardiovascular events decreases by approximately 15%.

These cardiovascular benefits were observed in individuals both with and without chronic kidney disease. While intensive treatment was associated with a higher relative likelihood of sustained decreases in the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), the analysis found no increased risk of actual kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplantation.
