The Bundibugyo-strain Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has become the deadliest and fastest-growing in the country’s history. By late August 2026, the epidemic has ~~escalated to over 5,700~~ reached 5,713 confirmed cases and ~~more than 2,700~~ 2,744 deaths, with a case fatality rate ~~estimated between 46% and~~ of approximately 48%. The virus is spreading across six provinces, including Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Tshopo, and Bas-Uélé. While the World Health Organization (WHO) and Africa CDC officially declared the end of the ~~Ebola~~ outbreak in neighboring Uganda following a 42-day monitoring period, the situation in the DRC remains critical. In Uganda, the outbreak resulted in 20 cases and two deaths, many imported from the DRC. To bolster regional response, Uganda has received a USD 500,000 mobile biosafety laboratory funded by the African Development Bank. Containment ~~in the DRC is~~ efforts are severely hindered by regional conflict, ~~where medical teams and NGOs face~~ including attacks on ambulances and ~~looting by armed groups. Logistical~~ treatment centers, which have resulted in the deaths of more than 40 health workers. Funding shortages pose a major threat to the response. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued an urgent appeal for $1.1 billion, warning that the epidemic is spreading faster than international responses can contain it. The total humanitarian response plan is estimated at $2.1 billion but is currently only 48 percent funded. Additionally, the WHO has flagged an immediate need for $30 million for logistical operations and ~~financial hurdles also persist, including unpaid~~ medical ~~staff and difficulties implementing strict burial protocols.~~ supplies.
