Resettlement of Ahıska Turk families in Turkey

Overview

Following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022, Ahıska Turk families were evacuated to Turkey. After initially residing in temporary shelters in Elazığ, a multi-stage permanent housing project coordinated by the Presidency of Migration Management has progressed toward long-term resettlement.

In the Ahlat district of Bitlis, 371 families have begun moving into newly completed permanent housing in the Tunus neighborhood. This second phase of the project accommodates 1,262 individuals. Alongside the completion of housing stages, Turkish officials have also finalized citizenship processes for the community, presenting members of the Ahıska Turk population with Turkish Republic identity cards.
