Resignation of Swiss President Guy Parmelin

Overview

Guy Parmelin, the Swiss President and Economic Affairs Minister, has announced his resignation from the Federal Council, effective December 31, 2026. A member of the Swiss People's Party (SVP), Parmelin has served in the federal government since 2016. He clarified that his decision follows long-term reflection and a desire to make way for “new energy and fresh forces” after more than a decade of service.

His departure has initiated discussions regarding potential successors within the SVP, including Esther Friedli, Céline Amaudruz, and Natalie Rickli, while prompting debates regarding linguistic balance and gender representation within the Swiss executive.

Amidst his resignation announcement, Parmelin is conducting a three-day state visit to India from October 5 to 7. The visit, aimed at deepening cooperation in trade, investment, science, technology, and mobility, follows the first anniversary of the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA). Under the TEPA framework, EFTA member states—Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway—aim to invest USD 100 billion in India over the next 15 years.

During meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu, leaders discussed expanding cooperation in infrastructure, nuclear energy, and defense. Key outcomes include the signing of several agreements, such as a migration and mobility partnership and a pact for the exchange of young professionals. Parmelin also visited the Noida International Airport to review its facilities and participated in the second India-EFTA Prosperity Summit on October 7. Discussions also touched upon global stability, including the conflict in Ukraine and reforms to the United Nations.
