Resignations of Chilean public officials

Overview

The administration of President José Antonio Kast has seen several high-level regional and national officials requested to resign following various controversies.

In early September, Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz requested the resignation of Alejandra Arriaza, the National Director of the National Customs Service. The move followed allegations of potential overpricing in a tender for scanner trucks and criticism from the National Association of Customs Officials regarding personnel shortages and labor overexertion.

By mid-September, the Ministry of Health requested the resignation of Dr. José Bravo Burgos, the Regional Ministerial Secretary of Health for La Araucanía. This followed controversial remarks made by Bravo regarding a fatal fire at an irregular elderly care facility in Pitrufquén, where he compared the closure of such establishments to closing a landfill. The Ministry noted his comments lacked the “responsibility, prudence, and sensitivity” required for the situation. Additionally, the Minister of Housing and Urbanism requested the resignation of the Seremi of Housing and Urbanism for Antofagasta, citing management deficiencies regarding a regional housing agreement.
