Resumption of international flights to Tripoli

Overview

Commercial aviation connectivity to Tripoli, Libya, has seen recent developments following years of regional instability and airspace restrictions.

In early October, Pegasus Airlines launched direct flights between Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport and Tripoli Mitiga International Airport. Initially operating four times a week, the service was scheduled to increase to daily frequency by mid-October to strengthen ties between Turkey and Libya.

Later in the month, Air Algérie resumed direct service to Mitiga International Airport after a hiatus of approximately ten to twelve years. This resumption follows the lifting of airspace restrictions by the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organization that had been in place since 2015. The airline began operating two flights per week to facilitate economic and tourism cooperation between Algeria and Libya.
