Resuscitation training initiatives in Germany

Overview

Efforts to improve resuscitation rates in Germany have focused on increasing bystander intervention through targeted training and public awareness. Data from the German Resuscitation Register indicated that in 2025, laypeople initiated resuscitation in 53.5 percent of cases where emergency services were not yet present.

To overcome public hesitation caused by fears of injury or physical aversion, the German Resuscitation Council (GRC) has advocated for introducing training in schools starting from the 7th grade. Medical professionals have utilized the ‘Check – Call – Press’ method to demonstrate effective responses to cardiac arrest.

Recent initiatives have expanded to specific demographics and community events. In Engern, a program organized with the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) was launched to teach first aid and crisis prevention to individuals over 60. Additionally, in Memmingen, local organizations including the Bavarian Red Cross and the Memmingen Clinic held demonstrations for ‘World Restart A Heart Day’ to provide hands-on training with mannequins and defibrillators.
