Revival of the National Library of Nigeria project
Overview
The Nigerian Federal Executive Council has approved funding to revive the National Library of Nigeria Headquarters Complex in Abuja, a project that has been stalled since October 2008. Funding is being provided through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and contributions from First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who reportedly directed approximately ₦25 billion from birthday gifts toward the project.
Following the mobilization of resources, the government has announced plans to remodel the facility to mirror the standards of the National Library of Qatar. Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa has issued warnings to contractors and consultants, stating they will face sanctions for missing deadlines. To expedite the process, the project has been split into two concurrent components: physical infrastructure and furnishing. The renewed initiative aims to create a modern institution featuring dedicated spaces for children and persons with disabilities.
