Revolut facial recognition payment rollout

Overview

Revolut has introduced ‘Pay with Smile’, a facial recognition payment pilot program in London. Tested at Kiss the Hippo cafes in Bloomsbury, Chelsea, and Soho, the service uses the ‘Revolut Register’ point-of-sale terminal to allow customers to authorize transactions via biometric data. To drive adoption, the company is offering 0% processing fees to merchants and triple RevPoints to customers. While Revolut maintains that facial data is encrypted end-to-end and not stored by merchants, privacy groups such as Big Brother Watch have expressed concerns regarding biometric security and the potential for deepfake misuse.

Following the launch, Revolut has continued to expand its service offerings and leadership structure. In addition to the facial recognition rollout in the United Kingdom, the company appointed Álvaro Alberdi as Head of Business Growth for Southern Europe and Latin America to oversee market entry and partnerships for Revolut Business.
