Revolut market entry and Hungarian banking competition
Overview
Following its acquisition of a Hungarian banking licence and the commencement of operations under the supervision of the Hungarian National Bank, fintech provider Revolut implemented restrictions on a large number of Hungarian users. These measures prevented customers from adding or withdrawing funds. Revolut stated these actions were “necessary to protect the integrity of the financial system” due to “suspicious activity” and regulatory obligations.
In response to Revolut’s market entry, domestic Hungarian banks have intensified competition to attract customers. Major financial institutions have begun offering zero-fee monthly account management packages and significant cash incentives, sometimes exceeding 100,000 HUF, to encourage new account openings and customer switching.
