Reyhanlı bombings suspect arrests
Overview
Security operations in Turkey and Syria have led to the apprehension of several individuals linked to the 2013 Reyhanlı bombings in Hatay, Turkey, which killed over 50 people.
In early October, Turkish security forces and the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) detained Bülent Dükkancı, identified as a member of the THKP-C, in Antakya. During the same period, MİT captured Ömer el-Hatip, a Syrian perpetrator wanted under a red notice, while he was attempting to flee to Europe by sea. El-Hatip is accused of coordinating between attackers and intelligence personnel loyal to the Bashar al-Assad regime. Additionally, the Syrian Ministry of Interior announced the capture of Cemal Trablusi, an associate of militant Mihraç Ural.
Following long-term tracking after the fall of the Assad regime, Mihraç Ural, also known as Ali Kiyali, was apprehended by the Syrian General Intelligence Directorate (GİS) while attempting to flee across the border. The capture was the result of a coordinated intelligence operation between Turkey’s MİT and the Syrian GİS. Ural, the leader of the ‘People’s Front for the Liberation of the Iskenderun Banner - Syrian Resistance’, is a fugitive defendant in the Reyhanlı bombings and has been accused of involvement in the Banyas and Beyda massacres of 2013, which allegedly resulted in the deaths of at least 150 people.
On the night of October 14, the operation successfully captured Ural, who has been identified as the mastermind behind the May 11, 2013, bombings. The attacks, involving two bomb-laden minibuses, resulted in 53 deaths and 146 injuries. Following the news, families of the victims gathered at the May 11 Martyrs' Monument in Reyhanlı for prayers. Ahmet Tuna, president of the May 11 Martyrs' Association, stated that the capture of the planner brings solace after 13 years.
