RGG Studio Stranger Than Heaven development

Overview

RGG Studio, the developer of the ‘Yakuza’ series, has released new details regarding its upcoming action-adventure game, ‘Stranger Than Heaven’.

Initial reveals focused on the combat system, showcasing protagonist Makoto Daito performing melee attacks, weapon combos, and parries. The system utilizes a unique control scheme allowing players to operate the character’s left and right sides independently. Sega and RGG Studio have clarified that this mechanic uses console triggers to allow independent control of limbs, aiming for a “heavy, realistic street-brawl feel rather than choreographed martial arts.”

Subsequent updates provided approximately 15 minutes of gameplay and expanded on the narrative and setting. The story follows Daito across five decades of Japanese history, from 1915 to 1965, exploring the origins of the Tojo Clan in locations inspired by Tokyo, Osaka, and Hiroshima. New features also include a music creation mechanic where players compose songs using recorded environmental sounds.

The game is scheduled for release on January 15, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and Game Pass.
