Rhône senatorial election political divisions

Political tensions have escalated in the Rhône department regarding the upcoming senatorial elections, centered on disputes over left-wing unity.

Initially, three left-wing organizations—L’Après 69, Générations 69, and Debout ! Rhône—issued an open letter contesting the placement of Hélène Geoffroy on a joint candidate list led by Green senator Thomas Dossus. The groups argued that Geoffroy’s past refusal to ally with La France Insoumise (LFI) undermined left-wing unity.

This friction evolved into broader fragmentation as Bruno Bernard, former president of the Lyon Metropolis, announced a dissident list. Bernard argued that many left-wing and ecological voters would not support candidates perceived as having hindered unity. In response, the Ecologist party imposed a temporary exclusion on Bernard and his list members.

Concurrently, Gabriel Amard of LFI launched a separate list backed by LFI and Génération·s, criticizing the Ecologists for “dynamiting” their national agreement with the Socialist Party. While Amard acknowledged he could not mathematically be elected, he positioned his candidacy as a measure to prevent the left from being eliminated from the Senate due to internal division.
