Riau Islands regional development and governance
Overview
The Riau Islands province recently marked its 24th anniversary, highlighted by the approval of a Rp3.63 trillion revised 2026 regional budget. This budget prioritizes education and public service infrastructure to support economic growth, which reached 6.99 percent in the second quarter of 2026.
To bolster regional development, Governor Ansar Ahmad met with the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) in Batam to discuss the history, culture, and tourism of Pulau Penyengat. The Governor addressed previous miscommunications with the PWI, expressing a commitment to working closely with the media to communicate government programs. In Batam, Mayor Amsakar Achmad met with community leaders and empowerment groups in Batu Aji, emphasizing that sustainable development requires “strong synergy between the government and the community” to improve regional governance.
Regarding infrastructure, the provincial government is proposing to upgrade approximately 620 kilometers of provincial roads to national status. Rodi Yantari, Head of the Public Works, Spatial Planning, and Land Affairs Office (PUPP), stated the proposal seeks to secure central government funding through the state budget (APBN) following a decrease in allocations for national road programs. The initiative aims to support maintenance and development across six regencies and cities, including Lingga, Natuna, Bintan, Karimun, Tanjungpinang, and the Anambas Islands. To qualify, the road segments must meet specific criteria, such as connecting industrial centers to government hubs.
