Rice smuggling incident in Sungai Golok

Overview

During a security patrol known as Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan near the Sungai Golok border in Tumpat, Malaysian Pasukan Gerakan Am (PGA) officers intercepted a long-tail boat carrying suspected smuggled rice. Upon being approached, two men jumped into the river to swim toward Thailand. While one individual successfully reached the Thai bank, the other disappeared underwater.

Initial reports indicated the second man was feared drowned. Following an inspection of the abandoned vessel, authorities discovered 1,178 kg of rice and 100 kg of glutinous rice, with an estimated value of RM5,412. The seized goods were handed over to the Kelantan Paddy and Rice Regulatory body for investigation under the National Paddy and Rice Regulatory Act 1994.

By the following day, the body of a 35-year-old Thai man was recovered by members of the public in the Sungai Golok area near Kampung Pisau Raut. The matter has been referred to Thai authorities for further action.
