Authorities in Campobasso are advancing their investigation into the December 2025 deaths of Antonella Di Ielsi and her fifteen-year-old daughter, Sara Di Vita, in Pietracatella. Following the discovery of ricin in their blood, investigators have expanded their inquiry to include new witnesses and potential motives involving personal relationships. Police are currently examining the connections of Gianni Di Vita, the victims' husband and father, including his relationship with a local teacher. During questioning, Gianni Di Vita reportedly admitted to an extramarital affair. Investigators are also awaiting crucial scientific results from the Robert Koch Institut in Berlin to identify the specific food or vector used to administer the toxin and to determine if Gianni Di Vita and the victims' other daughter, Alice, were exposed. Digital forensic searches have been conducted across four schools in the Riccia, Casacalenda, and Campobasso areas to identify online inquiries regarding the toxin. In Casacalenda, investigators performed a forensic copy of a notebook used by Laura Di Vita, a teacher and cousin of Gianni Di Vita. The probe also continues to evaluate whether a March theft of computers from the Silvio Di Lalla high school is linked to the case. In a recent development, investigators discovered several ricin plants in various locations, including fields between Riccia and Lake Occhito, and near the Institute of Human Sciences in Casacalenda. While the plants are a source of the toxin, authorities stated that no direct link has yet been established between their presence and the deaths. Recent investigative efforts have focused on analyzing seized items, including two water bottles—one white aluminum and one black plastic—containing colorless, odorless liquids, as well as a glass container holding a dark granular substance.
