Rijeka Hilton beach access dispute escalates

In early July 2026 MP Marin Miletić re‑installed a lock on the Hilton Costabella resort fence and accused the hotel of charging €130 per person for beach entry. On July 15 the State Attorney’s Office opened a formal probe after Miletić supplied video and invoices showing guests asked to pay for beach use; the hotel said the fee was part of a wellness package, not a separate access charge. Miletić broadened the dispute on July 20, naming county prefect Ivica Lukanović and several senior politicians—including former Rijeka mayor Vojko Obersnel and SDP leader Siniša Hajdaš Dončić—as allegedly linked to the hotel’s concessions, though no evidence was provided. On July 25 Miletić led about fifty supporters in boats to the Costabella beach and, using an electric grinder, repeatedly cut through the metal gates the hotel had installed. He posted videos declaring the beach a public good and pledged to keep reopening the passage until state authorities enforce the law. The Ministry of Sea, the State Attorney’s Office and the environmental police have opened investigations into the concession’s compliance. Hotel officials maintain the €130 fee is tied to a wellness package, not an entry charge. On 2 August 2026 Hilton sealed all pathways to the Costabella shoreline after Miletić’s removal of barriers, prompting the MP to denounce the action as arrogance backed by political elites and to reaffirm his commitment to free public access. In the nearby town of Supetar, authorities introduced a directive banning the reservation of beach spots by leaving towels, sun‑beds or umbrellas overnight; Mayor Ivana Marković warned that such equipment will be confiscated by maritime police, stressing that the beaches are public maritime property.
