The Rio de Janeiro Carnival is undergoing structural and digital transformations. As preparations move toward the 2027 Carnival, twelve several special group samba schools have begun finalized or are currently selecting their ‘samba-enredo’ themes. Portela has finalized its choice, selecting selected a composition by Wanderley Monteiro and partners to accompany the theme ‘Ao mestre, com carinho’, developed by designer Paulo Barros to honor the legendary composer Monarco. Additionally, Unidos do Viradouro is scheduled to host a semifinal competition in Niterói on September 12 to select its samba for the theme ‘Griô’, which focuses on West African oral traditions and their influence on Brazilian cultural memory. To increase accessibility, the Liga Independente das Escolas de Samba do Rio de Janeiro (Liesa) is facilitating live broadcasts of these competitions via the Rio Carnaval TV channel on YouTube to reach a global audience.
