The wave of confrontations between criminal gangs, militias, and police in Rio de Janeiro continued through August 2026. In March, the city saw the femicide of civil police inspector Daniela Cunha Moreira and a high-speed police chase on Avenida Brasil that killed military officer Fernando Plácido Roberto Rocha and four suspected Comando Vermelho members. Violence escalated in June and July through gun battles in Rio das Pedras, drone-delivered grenades, and an ambush on Avenida Brasil that killed Inspector Carlos Freire Neto. By mid-August, criminal activity intensified in the North Zone, including drone-bomb attacks in Complexo da Penha and a shooting on a public bus that left a speech therapist potentially tetraplegic. On 21 August, the Rio de Janeiro Military Police launched a major operation in the Complexo de Israel, targeting the Terceiro Comando Puro faction. The operation, involving approximately 200 officers and armored vehicles, focused on the communities of Cidade Alta, Pica-Pau, and Cinco Bocas.
