Rio de Janeiro police operation and criminal retaliation

Overview

On August 24, 2026, Rio de Janeiro Military Police launched a large-scale operation in the Parada de Lucas and Vigário Geral regions of the North Zone. Utilizing over 200 officers, specialized units including BOPE, the K9 Battalion, and the Choque Police, the operation employed armored vehicles, helicopters, and drones. The stated objectives were to suppress territorial disputes between criminal groups and combat activities such as cargo theft and illegal service exploitation.

The security mobilization led to the preventive closure of major thoroughfares, including Avenida Brasil and Linha Vermelha, and the suspension of classes at four municipal schools due to intense gunfire. Later that day, the situation escalated when criminals set fire to four trucks in the Coelho Neto area of Avenida Brasil, suspected to be retaliation against the BOPE operation. This arson caused significant traffic disruptions and forced the diversion of at least 20 bus lines. During the operation, authorities reported that four suspects surrendered following negotiations, and police seized rifles, grenades, a radio transmitter, a bulletproof vest, and drugs. Avenida Brasil was fully reopened by the afternoon.

Authorities have since announced an indefinite occupation of the Complexo de Israel, which encompasses Vigário Geral, Parada de Lucas, and Cordovil. The intervention aims to restore security in territory controlled by the Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP) faction. Beyond combating organized crime and vehicle theft, the occupation specifically targets religious intolerance, as investigations indicate the local criminal group has been persecuting practitioners of African-origin religions by using symbols associated with Israel to assert dominance.
