Rio de Janeiro urban revitalization projects

The City of Rio de Janeiro has implemented several urban development and infrastructure projects across different districts.

In the Campo Grande neighborhood, revitalization works were completed on Avenues Cesário de Melo and Joaquim Magalhães. This mobility-focused project included road paving, the construction of a new roundabout, reorganized bus stops, a 1.5-kilometer bike lane, and renovated sidewalks. The works also addressed drainage, water supply, and sewage networks to improve traffic flow and rainwater runoff.

Further initiatives include the establishment of the ‘Distrito Especial Reviver Rua da Carioca’ in the city center. This project aims to recover historic buildings and public spaces to boost tourism and economic activity through improved lighting, accessibility, and landscaping. The initiative is organized into five pillars: tax regularization, heritage recovery, economic activation, urban qualification, and the preservation of local identity and memory.

Expanding upon a 2023 project that focused on creating a brewery hub, the current phase seeks to transform the area into a broader hub for business, culture, and tourism by encouraging the occupation of vacant properties. The Municipal Secretariat for Economic Development will coordinate the project to support various sectors, including restaurants and cultural activities, while offering technical assistance for restoring building facades and interiors. Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere stated that the project is an action to “preserve the history of the city center while creating future opportunities.”

Additionally, the city has begun requalification works at the Parque Carioca Housing Complex in Jacarepaguá, focusing on 900 housing units. These efforts involve restoring sports courts, improving security and circulation, upgrading water and sewage infrastructure, and working toward the legal regularization of properties.

Recent developments include the continued integration of the ‘Distrito Especial Reviver Rua da Carioca’ as a central strategy for property recovery and economic stimulation in the historic center.
