Overview

In late July 2024, the Brazilian Geological Service warned that the Guaíba River in Porto Alegre could reach the 2.60 m alert level and possibly the 3 m flood benchmark. River measurements on 29 July showed levels around 2.48–2.54 m, prompting civil-defence authorities to raise the hydrological alert to orange. Tributaries such as the Taquari, Caí, Gravataí, and Sinos also exceeded local flood thresholds, with over 100 residents displaced in towns like Taquara and Rolante.

By 31 July 2024, the Guaíba rose to 2.58 m at the Cais Mauá station, extending the orange alert to the Arquipélago neighbourhood and riverside districts. The nearby Rio dos Sinos surged to 6.93 m in Novo Hamburgo and 5.22 m in São Leopoldo.

A similar episode re-emerged in July 2026. The Guaíba reached 2.58 m at Cais Mauá, prompting the Defesa Civil to maintain an orange hydrological warning. Authorities noted that strong southern winds could cause brief spikes and localized flooding, particularly in the Arquipélago district and the islands of Pintada, Marinheiros, and Flores. While water levels began a slow recession, streets remained partially inundated.

In the surrounding region, the Rio Paranhana rose above 5.5 m, leading to the evacuation of over 50 residents in Taquara. Although a temporary shelter in the Association of Motorists was later deactivated as levels fell, municipal teams remained on standby. In Porto Alegre, a vehicle was reported submerged in Lago Guaíba near the Ipanema waterfront, though no injuries were confirmed.
