Rising cancer rates in young populations
Overview
Medical reports from K Hospital and Motol Hospital indicate a rising incidence of cancer among younger demographics, specifically adolescents and young adults.
At K Hospital, experts noted that approximately one-third of patients are under the age of 50, with increasing cases of lung, breast, thyroid, colorectal, stomach, and kidney cancers. Dr. Ha Hai Nam identified obesity, poor nutrition, smoking, exposure to microorganisms like HPV or Hepatitis, and family history as primary risk factors. The trend is noted to present significant socioeconomic challenges due to reduced labor capacity.
Similarly, at Motol and Homolka University Hospital, Lucie Šrámková reported that while childhood cancer rates remain stable, there is an increase in intestinal tumors, colorectal cancer, and breast cancer in women under 40. While biological treatments are advancing, survival rates remain low for certain diagnoses such as brain tumors and soft tissue sarcomas. In response to patient needs, the hospital has implemented the ‘Plešouni’ project to improve the comfort of intensive treatment for children.
