Rising costs for Czech children's activities
Overview
Rising costs for children's extracurricular activities are placing significant financial pressure on families in the Czech Republic. A survey by the Czech Council of Children and Youth (ČRDM) found that nearly three-quarters of providers have increased prices, with some sports activities seeing hikes as high as 15%. These increases are attributed to rising expenses for energy, rent, equipment, and wages. Consequently, more than a quarter of parents have limited their children's sports participation, and 8% of children have stopped participating entirely.
In response to these pressures, charitable initiatives have expanded. The ‘Darujeme kroužky dětem’ (We Give Clubs to Children) project, which provides vouchers to help families afford organized leisure, has seen a 40 percent increase in applicants over two years, with single parents being the most frequent group seeking aid. Additionally, the ‘Krabice od bot’ (Box from Shoes) initiative has grown into a large-scale national project to provide Christmas gifts for children from families at risk of poverty.
