River and wetland conservation efforts in Spain
Overview
Environmental research and conservation efforts in Spain have focused on addressing pollution and managing invasive species within river and wetland ecosystems.
In the Albufera wetland, studies from the University of Valencia indicate that nutrient pollution is hindering ecological recovery. Researchers warn that increasing water flow without reducing pollutants at the source may increase the total mass of contamination, noting that nitrogen loads have risen significantly despite water volumes reaching minimum historical thresholds.
In Valladolid, local authorities have launched a tender for forestry and silvicultural work along 5.3 kilometers of the Pisuerga River. This project aims to protect native species and control invasive plants like ailanthus and robinia to improve the city’s ecological corridor. Additionally, in Pontevedra, an underwater photography exhibition has been hosted to promote awareness of the Lérez River’s biological diversity, documenting aquatic life such as salmon, eels, and lampreys.
