The relationship between River Plate and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) remains defined by institutional tension and efforts toward structural reform. Following a six-month period of boycotting meetings, River Plate has re-engaged with the AFA Executive Committee. Represented by President Stefano Di Carlo, Vice President Ignacio ~~Villarroel~~ Villarroel, and Agustín Forchieri, the club has formally presented a “critical document” focusing on six pillars: competition format, calendar and transfer alignment, institutional transparency, refereeing oversight, revenue generation, and media rights. River Plate’s specific proposals include a gradual reduction in the number of teams in the First Division, stricter rules regarding mid-season regulation changes, and a complete overhaul of the refereeing system, including calls for changes to the leadership of the National Arbitration Directorate and independent audits of referee assignments. In response, the Liga Profesional de Fútbol stated that these proposals will be analyzed for the 2028 season, noting that the 2027 competition structure has already been finalized. Regarding the 2027 season, the AFA has announced the introduction of the ‘Recopa de Campeones,’ a new official tournament utilizing a triangular format featuring the winners of the Copa Argentina, Supercopa Argentina, and Supercopa Internacional. This addition will bring the total number of official annual competitions to eight. Further AFA updates include a commitment to playing playoff semifinals and finals at neutral venues with access for both fan bases, alongside ongoing discussions to align Argentine transfer windows with European and Conmebol standards. The AFA also plans to maintain the use of extra time in playoff stages.
