Belgrano vs River Plate Apertura 2026 final

Overview

In mid‑May 2026 River Plate reported that defenders Gonzalo Montiel and Marcos Acuña had only minor muscular strains after their semifinal win, suggesting they would be available for the upcoming Apertura semifinal against Rosario Central.

Two days later Belgrano secured a place in the Apertura final by defeating Argentinos Juniors on penalties, setting up a championship clash with River Plate. The Argentine Football Association then confirmed the final would be held on 24 May at the Mario Alberto Kempes stadium in Córdoba.

On 24 May Belgrano overcame River Plate 3‑2 in a dramatic comeback. River opened the scoring, but Belgrano equalised before halftime and later took the lead. A VAR‑reviewed penalty gave Nicolás “Uvita” Fernández the chance to level, and he scored again minutes later to clinch the victory. The win delivered Belgrano its first Primera División title, a historic first league championship for a Córdoba club, and secured a 2027 Copa Libertadores berth. River Plate’s coach protested the officiating and faced disciplinary action, while the victory sparked massive celebrations in Córdoba.

Overall, the sequence moved from River’s injury concerns, through Belgrano’s semifinal triumph, to the scheduling and execution of a historic final that crowned Belgrano champions and reshaped the Argentine football landscape.
