Bendel Insurance ends Rivers United unbeaten run

Overview

Rivers United’s undefeated start to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season has come to an end following a 2-1 defeat against Bendel Insurance in Benin City.

Prior to the match, Rivers United remained the league’s only undefeated team, having prioritized defensive discipline as noted by assistant coach Yemi Olanrewaju, who stated, “The key thing for us is not to concede. If you don’t concede, you can’t lose a game.”

In the fixture at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Freeman Wuchirwe gave the hosts an early lead three minutes after half-time. Although Chijioke Mbaoma equalized for Rivers United with 17 minutes remaining, Jonathan James secured the victory for Bendel Insurance with a goal in stoppage time.
