Road accidents in Egypt
Overview
A series of fatal traffic accidents has occurred on major roads in Egypt. On October 10, a microbus rollover on the West Desert Road in the Minya Governorate near the ‘Egyptian Countryside’ project resulted in the deaths of Ahmed Diab Mahmoud, 53, and Magdy Sawi Ali, 63, and 11 injuries, including two children.
On October 20, a severe collision involving a private tour bus and a large truck occurred on the Cairo-Asyut Western Desert Road near the Giza Pyramids. While initial reports cited 13 deaths and 34 injuries, the Ministry of Health and Population later adjusted the figures to 12 dead and 30 injured. The impact was severe enough to completely sever the front section of the bus, requiring cranes to clear the wreckage.
On October 25, two separate vehicle collisions occurred on the Eastern Desert Road in the Beni Mazar district of Minya Governorate. The first involved a passenger bus, a microbus, and a heavy truck near Sheikh Fadl, causing two deaths and 23 injuries. A second collision between a minibus and a heavy truck resulted in two additional deaths and 37 injuries. In response, local hospitals in Samalut, Al-Sadr, and Beni Mazar raised emergency readiness levels.
On the same day, a separate accident in Minya claimed the lives of two young judo athletes, Lojain Abdel Aziz Saber and Rafif Mohamed Abdel Moneim, both under the age of 13. The victims were part of the ‘National Project for Talent and Olympic Champion’ and were returning from the Republic Judo Championship in Cairo. The crash injured 35 others, including three with severe injuries. Assiut Governor Mohamed Alwan coordinated medical care at Maghagha Hospital, while social solidarity directorates were instructed to provide support to the families.
