Rodrigo Pacheco appointment to the TCU

Overview

Rodrigo Pacheco, a former President of the Brazilian Senate and criminal lawyer, has transitioned to a new role as a minister of the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU).

In early September, the Brazilian Congress approved Pacheco’s appointment to replace Bruno Dantas, who resigned to enter the private sector. The nomination was expedited by Senate President Davi Alcolumbre and received significant support from both the government and opposition in both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.

Following his resignation from the Senate, which left his seat to be filled by Renzo Braz, Pacheco was officially sworn in as a TCU minister. The TCU is a technical body responsible for auditing the application of federal public resources.

On Wednesday, September 30, 2026, Pacheco officially assumed his position during a ceremony in Brasília attended by high-ranking officials, including Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and several Supreme Federal Court (STF) justices. The appointment was formalized by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. As a TCU minister, Pacheco holds a life-long position with mandatory retirement at age 75.

In his inaugural speech, Pacheco emphasized the importance of institutional dialogue, stating, ‘I believe that institutional dialogue does not weaken institutions, it strengthens them.’ He also highlighted the court's role in protecting public resources and evaluating the effectiveness of public policies. His Senate seat will continue to be occupied by his substitute, Renzo Braz (PP-MG), until the end of the current legislature in February 2027. Braz, who served as the first alternate on Pacheco's 2018 ticket, has stated his commitment to regional development and political balance.
