Romania continues to navigate energy security and infrastructure financing challenges. In Bucharest, the metro operator Metrorex is addressing electricity debts exceeding 11 million lei owed to Hidroelectrica. Interim Transport Minister Radu Miruță stated that while a control mission is investigating the company’s financial management and fund efficiency, the subway is making daily payments to reduce arrears and faces no immediate risk of disconnection. Metrorex has clarified that its current debt is now less than the value of a single month’s electricity consumption, noting that the operator consumes approximately 1 million euros worth of electricity per month. In response to the financial situation, the interim Minister of Transport has expanded the mission of the Control Body to investigate the company, citing concerns regarding the efficient use of funds. To manage grid stability, the energy regulator ANRE has approved a consumption flexibility service coordinated by Transelectrica. This mechanism allows consumers, suppliers, and aggregators to receive compensation for voluntarily reducing electricity usage during peak periods. Regarding industrial stability, the Ministry of Energy has denied reports of imminent industrial disconnections. Officials clarified that large consumers are notified of potential limitations 24 hours in advance as a preventive measure to protect the national grid. Efforts to enhance energy resilience include the promotion of storage solutions. Beyond previous discussions regarding mandates for battery storage in new photovoltaic installations, the government is promoting the ‘Casa Verde Baterii’ program, which aims to provide funding for prosumers to acquire battery systems.
