Romania military helicopter procurement

Overview

Romania has entered into a contract to acquire 12 Airbus H225M Caracal multirole helicopters to modernize its Air Force and replace its aging fleet of IAR-330 Puma rotorcraft. The agreement is valued at approximately 757 million euros.

The procurement was finalized through the French Directorate General of Armament (DGA) under the European Commission’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) programme, which is designed to accelerate defense readiness and support the European defense industry.

The new helicopters will be configured for various missions, including reconnaissance, surveillance, tactical protection, and airborne assault operations. The acquisition is intended to strengthen Romania’s industrial capabilities through a partnership with IAR, the nation’s sole helicopter manufacturer. Romania has indicated potential plans to acquire an additional 30 helicopters after 2030, with the objective of shifting H225M production to IAR facilities in Brașov.
