Romania railway modernization with Alstom

Entities: Romania · Authority for Railway Reform (ARF) · Horațiu Cosma · CFR Călători · Alstom

Overview

In late July 2026 Romania’s railway authority received the first five of a 16‑unit order of Alstom Traxx electric locomotives, a contract worth 767 million lei. The new units, capable of 200 km/h and 6.4 MW power, are slated for routes such as Bucharest‑Suceava, Bucharest‑Iași and other major corridors.

Two days later the delivery was confirmed, with the locomotives expected to enter service within three weeks after administrative steps. While the network can only support such speeds on limited sections (e.g., Bucharest‑Constanța), the locomotives will join CFR Călători’s fleet, replacing aging diesel stock and complementing a broader modernization program that includes additional electric multiple units and rolling‑stock refurbishment under the national recovery plan.
